“Charlatan: Homecoming” Begins

Charlatan 4 Cover

About a month ago I posted the ending of the third issue of Charlatan which closed the 3-issue Preludes storyline.  Today, we begin Charlatan #4 which launches into the Homecoming storyline.  Both Preludes and Homecoming are 3 issue “mini-arcs” which, when combined, tell the origin story of the One Defender on the alien homeworld and then bring the action back to Earth where the implications of Lucy being revealed as the next universal champion are beginning to be emerge.

And for Issue 4, I am trying something new.  On this site (my personal one), I will continue to post page updates of Charlatan #4 throughout the year, updating the issue as a regular webcomic.

However, if you would like to download the entire issue 4 now, I am offering DRM-free PDF downloads on Ozmatic.com allowing you to “NAME THE PRICE” that you think is fair for the issue.   The link to Charlatan #4 can be found here: Charlatan #4

In fact, if you have been a webcomic reader of Charlatan on this site and want to own PDF copies of the book for your digital collection or want to support the book, all 4 issues of Charlatan are available for download and purchase as DRM-free PDFs on Ozmatic.com.

With the Halfords back on Earth we get to explore a whole new universe of heroes and villains who have emerged as a result of the revelation of the new Defuwan.   I couldn’t be more excited to be able to share issue 4 with readers and I sincerely hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

More Charlatan On The Horizon

As we near the end of Charlatan Issue 2 being posted on this site, over the past few weeks I have been thinking over (or should I say overthinking?) where to go next with the book, both in terms of Charlatan as a webcomic and as a published book.

While considering what to do, I have also been looking at some creators who have both a established a compelling web presence for their books and who have been able to successfully publish their works beyond their webcomic version for a broader audience.

I am almost finished with ’Jason Brubaker’s excellent “how to” book, Unnatural Talent, which speaks directly about considerations around building an audience for your comic on the web and beyond.  Jason’s phenomenal webcomic, reMIND, is also now available in a beautiful print edition and it is great to get be able to read, in-depth, about how Jason approached the process of online and print publishing.  Along those lines, Jim Zub, who is the writer of Skullkickers and Ron Randall, who is the creator of Trekker, have each continued to post their works on the web for free while having successful “hard copy” editions of their works published.

Although I don’t have everything figured out yet, looking at the work of these top creators and others, I have come to a few conclusions about Charlatan for the time being:

1)  I intend to publish Charlatan as a webcomic beyond Issue 2.  The idea behind Charlatan has always been to tell an entertaining (and hopefully at times moving) tale and share the story with as broad an audience as possible.  I don’t know how much Charlatan I will end up posting online, but I can definitely say that for now it feels like it is too soon to stop sharing the story on this site.  So onward to Issue 3!

2)  I will move my regular schedule to posting new pages on Mondays.   On Thursdays, I will try to share some thoughts on what is going on with the book and other comics-related topics.

3)  I have also decided to self-publish digital editions of Charlatan.  With my limited web skills, I try to make the webcomic reading experience of Charlatan as easy as possible on this site and via the wonderful Comic Rocket platform, but there is also something to be said for the experience of reading tablet or mobile-native digital comics.  Not sure exactly how those digital editions will roll-out, but expect some announcements very soon regarding Charlatan being available for digital download.

4)  I will once again be offering print editions of the original Charlatan: Preludes trade paperback for sale.  Look for a STORE section to pop-up shortly on the site.

That’s all for now in terms of updates, but before I close I also want to mention that we are now only 4 pages away from the ending of Charlatan Issue 2 and, in my humble opinion, it offers a bigger shocker than the revelations at the end of Issue 1.  Really excited to be able to share the conclusion of Issue 2 and I sincerely hope you enjoy it!
